CSU alumnus wins Miss Asian America Pageant

By Kelli Pryor

Even though CSU alumnus Amanda Igaki is the reigning 2008 Miss Asian America Colorado, don't dare call her a beauty queen.

The Miss Asian America Colorado event was created this year by Asian Avenue magazine as more than a beauty pageant. The contestants had to possess more than physical attractiveness, they needed to demonstrate intelligence, compassion and the desire to serve.

"The girls and I want people to know this [The Miss Asian American Colorado pageant] is a leadership program and not a beauty pageant," the 24-year-old Igaki, who was the only CSU alumnus to compete in the pageant, said.

The night of the main event was the culmination of two months of preparation.

Pageants share one mission

Asian-American leadership is focus

By Gil Asakawa

... On a recent Saturday, a group of contestants vying for Miss Asian American Colorado weren't reaching for a crown. They were reaching for hard hats and hammers and nails. As part of their commitment to service, they were putting up siding at a Habitat for Humanity site in Commerce City.

The Habitat project was chosen to make a statement says event founder and coordinator Annie Guo. "The image we want to build is the hard hat and nailing things together," she says. "The goal is to fight the objectification of Asian women. I was very interested in doing a hands-on service project, but I didn't want to do something traditional that women might be doing, like going to a nursing home."

Asian Avenue magazine to hold Miss Asian American Colorado

Local Asian-American publication to put on inaugural competition for young Asian-American woman

By Joe Nguyen

DENVER – Asian Avenue magazine announced Jan. 10 through its Facebook group that it will hold the first Miss Asian American Colorado event on May 31 at the Holiday Inn Select Denver.

According to the event's website, the competition is meant to give young Asian-American women the opportunity to develop friendships, as well as leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills. Organizers made a point to not call this a pageant because the word creates a focus on beauty.

"The whole point is that we wanted to be focused on academics, leadership and service," Asian Avenue magazine Executive Editor Annie Guo said. "And really what (the contestants) have been doing to be role models for the Asian community."

MISS ASIAN AMERICAN COLORADO PROGRAM PRESENTS A NEW PICTURE OF 'BEAUTY' FOR WOMEN IN COLORADO WITH ITS "LEADERSHIP. SERVICE. INDIVIDUALITY." THEME.

ASIAN AVENUE MAGAZINE

DENVER, CO - Asian Avenue magazine is pleased to host the first Miss Asian American Colorado event, taking place on the evening of Saturday, May 31, 2008. This year's 28 contestants are Asian American women ages 18-25 who represent nine Asian ethnicities, 15 mile-high cities, and 11 different schools. This is the first event of its kind in Colorado! We hope you will take interest and provide media coverage at any of the events throughout our two-month program.

Unlike traditional pageants, this is a program that enhances leadership skills, personal development, and ultimately, creates a strong network for these women that will last long after May 31. In addition to the upcoming events below, the women have signed an agreement to participate in the program for another year, up through June 2009. The 2008 Miss Asian American Colorado winner will be required to reunite the women bi-monthly through service projects and professional events. This year's Miss Asian American Colorado schedule includes:

• 4/19/2008 Leadership/Personal Branding Workshop, 11am-2pm

Led by Erin Yoshimura, Empowerful Changes

• 4/20/2008 BBQ Meet and Greet at Clement Park, 1pm – 4pm

6001 S Pierce St, Littleton, CO

Open to public—opportunity for community to meet the contestants

• 5/3/2008 Miss Asian American Colorado Service Day, 9:30am – 4pm

Habitat for Humanity, Commerce City

• 5/31/2008 Miss 2008 Asian American Colorado Event, 6:30-10pm

Holiday Inn Select –  Cherry Creek

455 S Colorado Blvd, Denver, CO 80246

We invite you, the media groups, to attend and cover any of these events. Based on the principle that our world depends on the leadership of today's youth, the goal of Miss Asian American Colorado is to increase public awareness of the diversity and strengths of the Asian American community and redefine past perceptions of beauty as merely physical appearance. The program will develop these women to become future leaders and role models for the community, who are empowered, intelligent, and compassionate.

Since this is the first year of the event, Asian Avenue magazine hopes you can show your support, in any capacity, in order for the event's success and future growth. It would be very meaningful to the contestants if your media groups would pick up a story about our program. We thank you very much.
